More About Audubon Bird Guide

The Audubon Bird Guide is a free and complete field guide to over 800 species of North American birds, right in your pocket. Built for all experience levels, it will help you identify the birds around you, keep track of the birds you've seen, and get outside to find new birds near you.
With over 2 million downloads to date, it is one of the best and most trusted field guides for North American birds.

NOTE:

Thank you to all our users for the feedback on the new update. We'll be incorporating many of your feature suggestions and fixes in the next few updates. We very much appreciate your help and support.

Based on your feedback, we're currently working on the following issues:
- Restoration of user-created sighting lists. These lists were safely migrated with your account, but an issue is preventing them from being displayed. These will be restored soon in a future update, without any action required on your part.

- The ability to sort species alphabetically by last name in the field guide.

- Improved performance when searching and browsing lists of species, including the ability to quickly jump to a letter of the alphabet.

- Usability improvements, including photo and map display issues, for tablet users

- The ability to access the field guide, nearby eBird sightings, and other app features that don't require user-submitted data without first creating an account

- Other assorted usability and stability fixes

As always, if you need help with the app, or have a suggestion for a new feature, please contact us directly at audubonconnect@audubon.org. Thanks!

This is absolutely one of the best apps I use. I'm not a "birder" so appreciate the ability of the app to use my location, time of year, and bird characteristics (size, type, etc.) to identify the birds I am seeing. I've also found that playing the calls included for the bird really brings them in to investigate the "stranger" in their territory so I can get a nice, close look at them.

Updated the app, signed back in and saw that I lost all the birds in my list that I used for calls. That was the only reason I used this particular app. So if you still have the older version on your phone, DON'T UPDATE the app! June 2, 2021 Edit: It happened again. A few days ago the app was updated and now my custom bird call list is gone again. Not only that, the app won't even let me create a new list to start all over. I un-installed the app and installed it again but that didn't help.

EDIT 2: Still required. EDIT: Sorry, Audubon, but, unless I misunderstood your reply, I can't find a way to use this app without an account. To support you, I would gladly pay for a reasonable outright purchase that didn't have that requirement, but had local backup as an option. However, if you were referencing a different app without an account requirement, I couldn't find it listed with this developer's apps. Thanks. ORIGINAL: Account required.

Normally, I like this app a lot. Right now, I am extremely frustrated. I can't create a new location at which to report sightings. I've tried several times including after restarting my phone. It goes through all the steps but after saving the new location, it doesn't show up on the list of my sites. Also, pressing on Contact Us doesn't do anything.

The app could be fantastic but it crashes while I try to input new sightings. All of my photos upload sideways and there's no way to fix it. 13/15 of the sightings that I've put in don't show on my list but it will still say 15 total. It would be nice if there was a way to download/save the pictures taken in the app as well, but once I added an entry with a picture taken from inside the app I can no longer open/edit the entry and clicking on my picture just takes me to the birds field guide page

I've really enjoyed using this app to get to know the birds in my area. You can put in a bunch of different information about a bird you see (location, colors, size, type of call, etc...) and it gives a list of possible matches. I can typically find the right bird. It also has a "similar birds" tab to help you if you're not totally sure. I love the amount of pictures this app has and the recorded bird calls you can listen to. It also has lots of information about each bird - nesting, diet, migration, stuff like that. And, even though the app is huge, I like that I can use the whole thing without needing to have data service while I'm hiking or whatever. This is a great app!

This app is really quite good overall. The field guide is attractive and user friendly. It's bird ID feature for when you don't know a bird's name is perfect for an advanced beginner/intermediate level birder. I have a few issues though which makes this 3 stars for me. * There doesn't seem to be a way to export your life list in an ebird readable format. * The field guide doesn't have bar charts for the birds * It is way too easy to accidentally wipe your custom lists 😭

In the past, I would have given this app 5 stars without hesitation, but lately it has been very buggy. My main issue right now is that when I go to set the location of the Field Guide and select my state, the 'Save' and 'Close' buttons don't work, and I get stuck on that screen. To exit, I have to close the app and reopen. It's seems like the app has gotten less functional over time.

I cannot open this app! All I get is an image of a pelican. Very disappointed and hope this gets fixed. I guess I must uninstall and try again another time. Update: I did a little digging and found that my "permissions" settings were all turned off, as in, nothing was allowed. Once I changed these the app became functional. Odd thing is, though, unlike other apps that usually have a window that pops up regarding permissions, this didn't happen during installation. Glad to have it working, though

I often use the app without cell coverage, and there are two issues that cause problems: 1. The downloaded field guide data periodically disappears with no warning, making the app kind of useless in remote locations. 2. There's no way to create a new sighting in a remote location without cellular coverage. Other than these problems, the app works very well.

So far so good! 3 complaints, if you edit or add photo to sighting it will disappear from sightings record but still keep the same count for sightings... can't figure out why but worked around it. I really would love illustrated in flight renditions showing different colors and feathers of all the birds. Also a flight pattern graph showing actions in flight. These two features in paper bound books were a huge help in identifying birds and hope this is added in near future. Great otherwis!

Updated review 5 stars, as the developers were very helpful. Thanks to Bird ID I've identified more species than I ever did before, and it's given me an appreciation for how varied your own backyard can be. But lately, some glitch has kept me from adding new sightings. Clicking on the 'Add Sighting' button and species in my Life List revert me to the previous page. Also, the last bird I was able to add only shows up in the Life List, but not in that locations list. Pls fix soon.

Have used this app for a few years, and loved it. Even recommended it to a photographer and he loves it. Now, suddenly, the app won't open. I have uninstalled and installed it a half dozen times. Can open it from the installation, but once it's closed, I can't reopen it. Please fix whatever bug has infected it! I have the android platform...Galaxy S9. Once the app is fixed, I will give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have a Galaxy S23, currently a top-of-the-line, flagship phone, and this app just plain does not work! It won't display any kind of sighting information, the map freezes and locks up the rest of the app, I can't make any changes to my alert list,... It's hard to believe that what was once one of my favorite outdoor/wildlife apps has so severely failed me! I have already tried contacting Customer Service, and they frankly were no help at all. Incredibly disappointing.

10/5/18 update: I REALLY wish this app was easy to use. 1) you can no longer add pictures of sightings, even though it gives you the option (doesn't work). 2) Cannot easily add locations to where you have sightings (always gives a "use location" option, but you cannot continue because it doesn't work) 3) Cannot delete existing locations. I have a bunch of wrong locations in my list because it's so difficult to add them. So I've used my phone's location and tried to rename, but it doesn't work correctly. I think I'm done with the app at this point. Really sad. This app is "Ok". The process of logging your sightings is a bit tedious, but you have to play with it a while. The category listings take some work getting used to, but it isn't easy to just jump to a bird type if you don't know where to start. .. not too user- friendly for identifying birds, but it is a decent electronic field guide.

Love this app and use it frequently. Unfortunately, recent updates have been buggy - the bird ID function doesn't filter out birds by location anymore (even when my state is selected) and the "add sighting" page has some formatting issues. When I try to edit a sighting, the changes don't save, and I get stuck in a loop, until I stop and restart the app. Can't wait for these to get fixed!

Very helpful for identifying birds and tracking those those I have seen and where I have seen them. App has some annoying issues. I have contacted them and explained step by step in detail what the problem was. They wanted me to record my screen and demonstrate the issue. If they can't follow the instructions I provided, they need new support persons.

First off, I really love this app! Being able to identify and keep track of birds I've identified is awesome! I had an issue where I downloaded the offline field guide, after which the app would freeze after loading and nothing I would click on would work. My solution: go into android app settings and clear the cache and delete app data. I had to sign in again, which prompted me to download the field guide again. So far its working again.

Installed the app & had problems right from the start. I signed in with Facebook, 1st mistake! Then it wouldn't let me create an account or change my email address. It seems like it locked all my Facebook information in this app and wouldn't let me change any of it! It kept asking for a password but never gave me an opportunity to set up a password in the first place! I finally gave up. I was hoping that there was a way to use bird songs as ringtones and notification sounds, but there isn't.

Has been a great app for years, loved the ability to store this app's nearly 800MB of data on my Galaxy S7's SD card. Now that's no longer an option, had to delete app as it was overloading my phone's internal memory. Was a great app until I could no longer use it. Edit 2/23/2024: Two months later and still no longer the option to store it's 800mb on my S7s SD card, overloading my internal memory , after being told the issue had been fixed. Sure wish this could be resolved finally.
