More About Capital Bikeshare

Capital Bikeshare is DC, Virginia, and Maryland’s bike share system, and the first large scale bikeshare in the nation. Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) has thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations across Washington DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Tysons, Reston, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Bethesda and Chevy Chase. Best of all, it’s available 24/7.
CaBi consists of a fleet of specially designed, sturdy and durable bikes that are locked into a network of docking stations throughout the city. The bikes can be unlocked from one station and returned to any other station in the system, making them ideal for one-way trips. People use bike share to commute to work, meet friends for dinner, or simply cruise around and see new sights. After signing up, all trips under 30 minutes are free.
The CaBi App lets you purchase rides, unlock a bike, and ride right away. You can also view all station locations, see available bikes and docks, and get walking directions to them to start your ride.

The Capital Bikeshare app also shows upcoming public transit departures, including WMATA Metrorail, Metrobus, and shuttle lines, DC Circulator buses, Fairfax Connector buses, Montgomery RideOn buses, Alexandria DASH buses, Prince George’s County TheBus buses, Arlington Regional Transit buses, VRE trains, and the Silver Line Express.

Within the app, you can purchase the following:
Single Ride
Access Pass
Membership

Happy riding!

Account has been on hold for the past 2 weeks. Called multiple times only to hear that they'll email me with a resolution. They haven't. Also tried emailing. Nothing. Worst of all, I purchased a year membership and it's just going to waste since of their incompetency.

Can't use the app anymore. The map shows up with no dock/bike information. The public transit tab doesn't produce any results either. My Profile page opens with no issues, but can't get the Ride History refresh to show previous trips. All in all, a broken app, and coincidentally my annual membership is up for renewal, so I'll wait before deciding on to pay for another year.

The new update has rendered this app totally unusable. The QR scan functionality doesn't work. I was left stranded when I couldn't unlock a bike, and there was no back-up option to unlock using the keypad. The update also removed the trip planning feature. I can't check for docks near my destination before unlocking a bike. Now, I have to plan my route in a Maps app, then return to the bike app to blindly search in the general area of my destination for a dock. Total design failure.

Absolutely avoid at all costs. Customer support is non existent. Charged me for a full membership then didn't give me the membership. Charged me for rides that never happened and I'm still unable to get a refund cause there is no one at customer service. If you have to use it, make sure you tie it to a credit card so you can charge back every time they mess up, and they will mess up.

Very fast and intuitive app! I particularly like the fact that you can see how many bikes are at each station and that it is so quick to check one out! What pleased me the most, however, is how attentive it is. I recently had my bike lock but complete the ride due to an issue with one of the docks, and the app notified me and gave me the option to call customer support so that I would not continue to be charged!

I've been an annual member for about 10 Years. About 2 months ago it just stopped working. Keyfob didn't work...would just get red light. Tried scanning QR code on handlebars with app and it says "My account is on Hold" I've called multiple times and they tell me my account is fine and working. Also been told to download Lyft App. (That also doesn't work) Sent numerous emails with screenshots of App messages. Haven't received any replies. My Android is up to date. I've reinstalled the app. I can't even go into app or online to look at credit card info or even change credit cards. It was supposed to automatically renew membership on Oct 18 like it has for the past 10 years. It wouldn't even renew. Maybe that's a hint that I should just give up on Capital Bikeshare.

Returned a bike and the machine turned green to confirm it. App refuses to end the ride. Filed a report with pictures and called many times. 3 hours later and still not fixed. Phone rep said it's "server issues". Edit: Finally got it fixed after many phone calls and several days later. Was charged $90 late fee that I had to call about again to get a refund. Will never use again.

You can no longer unlock via 5-digit code. I don't want to have my phone out to scan the bike when I'm halfway in traffic and adjusting the seat! Keep the legacy unlock systems at least at the stations that still have these, which at this point is every station. Edit: No longer seems you can purchase guest bikes.

Great app, but you need a membership to rent multiple bikes from one phone. Not clear online, made for a rough day with my family.

This company is not worth it. They took my money instantly for the unlimited plan but I can't get a bike. Now they are saying my refund will take a week or more. I hope this company gets shut down and all bikes removed from DC

I don't have the ride together option in my app! I'm trying to rent bikes for 2 and have no way to do it (at the kiosk, it gives a 5-digit code, and all ebikes are only accepting 4 digits and giving an error.

A very poorly designed system. The app doesn't allow you to book multiple bikes for friends / family (or at least it's impossible to tell how to do this). To make matters worse, the pay station at the bike rank is overly complicated and asks for US phone numbers, US post codes etc (which international visitors like us don't have). We're now stuck with only one bike for two people. It should be as simple as: 1. Pay with credit card, then 2. Take bike.

If a station is full, but you park an ebike within a few feet, you shouldn't be charged as if you're leaving it in a random spot. Greedy. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

One of the worst app/company experiences. Avoid Capital Bikeshare. It is literally worse than the bus. I rode Capital Bikeshare 4 times and had to contact their help 3 times because of how trash it is. And their "help" is atrocious, literally offering no solutions. The time I called them, they literally hung up on me before helping me.

Great, reliable app. I particularly like that you can toggle the map between displaying available bikes and available parking spaces. The only deficiency is that the businesses shown on the map are not always accurately located (sometimes being on the wrong block) and the suggested bike routes are not always optimal, so using Google Maps is still necessary.

Decent, but with a major flaw. The app tells you how many bikes and how many open docks are available. That's vital info. Without it, you can know whether a bike will be available to you or where you can drop off your bike. The problem is, the app's info is very rarely correct, particularly regarding the number of open docks. I had multiple occasions where I went to drop off a bike only to discover that although the app says there are 3 open docks, there are really only 2 and both are broken!

Interface is not simple enough to navigate. It was too difficult to learn how to set up multiple bikes for family members from one device. While we tried to figure it out, the app just kept charging us for the bike we already scanned. We never figured out how to add additional bikes. Then, docking stations were full or not accessible, so it just kept charging us until we found an empty dock to return the bikes to. Took us way off of our route to return the bikes. We missed a scheduled tour.

Frustrating Experience – Not Worth the Hassle I wouldn’t recommend Capital Bikeshare. We wasted a good chunk of our one-day trip just trying to find an open station to return the bikes—many were either full or completely closed. When we finally found one and locked the bikes in place, the return didn’t register in the app, causing more confusion. On top of that, two out of the three people in our group had their apps crash mid-ride. We ended up ditching the bikes and using Lime instead.

Awful app. Inaccurate / misleading pricing descriptions with no support. Bikes will "pause" when you go into a store, and then be un-ridable when you come back to un-pause. I bought a day pass, misunderstanding that this would work for the days rides...it did not, and I was charged separately for each ride, all the while the app would say that the ride was included. Wherever you are, there must be other options that will work properly, and not rip you off. Avoid this company if at all possible.
