Finally we get crosswords and a bookmark feature that works. Unfortunately otherwise the app appears to have taken some backward steps. Crucially there seems no way to swipe between articles - surely a must have (and which worked on the previous app iteration). It's also a shame that you can't adjust font size - it's just too big on the new app. Finally, the 'most read' section hasn't changed in days. I was looking forward to a new app but sadly this isn't it.

I find the new app cluncky and difficult to navigate. I find it hard to focus on individual stories or headlines. Individual stories don't stand out. The layout reminds me of American news sites such as Fox news. From the second they made the big update, I've found myself using other news sites much more. I will probably reduce my subscription to the absolute minimum.

Really poor upgrade considering how long the original app was in need of a revamp. UX is awful. Not being able to swipe right/left between different sections/articles is really poor for a news app in 2022 – very basic functionality requirement. Far too much empty space – it’s a chore to read an article given how much scrolling you have to do. You can only see a single article on the home screen! Why not use the FT, UK Times, or Guardian template – all 4+ stars?? Won’t be renewing my sub!

In relation to the new app here are some regressions versus the old app. 1. The formatting of the headlines is inconsistent, and the font is too big. I need to scroll down to much to see the top stories. 2. Clicking on the body of the article (while still on the initial page) doesn't bring you into the article. You need to click on the picture or the headline. 3. You can't scroll between sections (e.g. Ireland, Politics) by swiping right/left.

When it works it is pretty good. Can be slow to open and has a really annoying problem... It cannot be viewed unless you have an active connection and if your connection drops for a split second it throws you out of the app, you then have to restart the app loosing the article you were reading..

Absolutely everything is behind a subscriber only paywall. Not just opinion and lifestyle type articles but even the latest news. I subscribed for a couple of months and was still being shown ads and sponsored "articles". Not only that, but to cancel you have to email or call their subscription team, the contact details of which aren't easy to find. If you cancel the direct debit, their team actually call you to ask why! Edit: No search! Such a shame because it seems a quality news source.

App update means headlines can't be easily read on Home screen, user has to always scroll down. Also seems to be no way to omit images or to resize fonts. This is basic stuff for a news app. On the plus side the Search function is welcome and the removal of the dreadful comments (whinging) capability is a definite improvement. Update: app is now working only intermittently, screen is often blank white after splash screen. Also there has been no improvement to the badly designed layout.

The app keeps crashing, you can't swipe between catagories, and there is no longer a way to react to frankly some poor, one sided articles. Almost 4 months after my initial post and many emails to app support their response is, 'try reinstalling it...." No change and not very confidence inspiriting. The app is poorly coded, has some serious functional deficiencies and needs to be overhauled if The Irish Times is serious about digital journalism.

Need to be able to swipe between articles. Also should be able to click any part of the article preview to read more rather than just on the headline. Navigation a bit clunky. Should be more intuitive. Example is menu bar in top left corner. Unless you hit it precisely it won't open. Recommended articles in app are opening in chrome rather than the app.

Good app with two serious flaws. Firstly, no search function, so if I want to search I have to switch to the browser version which does have a search. Secondly, when I click to a second Irish Times article from within an article, the formatting changes from being the standard app formatting to being an embedded web browser with much less functionality and bad formatting. Please fix! Otherwise 5 stars.

Definitely a significant improvement on the older app which was annoyingly crude to use. Much better flow now. It's a bit irritating to encounter the same article/piece more than once though! Perhaps list the 10 best/current/most popular higher up in the running order? If I've read it, I don't want to have to scroll past it again! Well done to the upgraders. That was a long overdue step.

The app is functional but has a few frustrating issues. Notifications often take you to the home page instead of the specific article (I suspect this is happening when the article has been updated since the notification was sent). And as others have said there is no search functionality, even for current day's articles.

A huge downside of The Irish Times app is its lack of a search function. The paper itself is the best Irish-based newspaper available, in my opinion. It's therefore a pity the app is not better. However, in order to access the search function on my phone I must sign into the browser version. I may just stay signed in on the browser (if it allows me to) instead of using the app so as to get access to the search function. I echo the problems with email briefings not just bouncing me to a signed-in app. Without this function the email briefings are becoming irritating.

App not opening properly. Takes ages to open pages for the last few days.

Doesn't support opening web links in app. So, if I find an old subscriber-only article on the web I have to manually search for it in the app.

App won't open for me. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. Think I'll just stick to the mobile site. Very annoying.

Please sort out your broken links IT! Clicking on something you're interested in and being brought to some random other story is basic stuff you shouldn't be screwing up

App is online only, won't work offline. Constantly being logged out of account for no reason. Worse, logging back in again won't use your Google account half of the time so you have to dig your password out. It's a shockingly poor app given this is 2024 and hardly reflects the standing of the Irish Times.

The font size is tiny. There is no font adjustment option in the app. Customer Service say increase the font in phone settings. That doesn't work unless at highest level (which makes everything else on the phone look daft). Not acceptable for a paid service. Four alternative news sources that I know of have in app font adjustment option. Reported twice and doesn't seem to be a priority to fix. Deleted and using Chrome for now. Will cancel subscription if not fixed soon.

Extremely clunky redesign and very poor UX. Why can't you swipe left/right anymore to change sections. And overall, you have to scroll too much. Far too much empty space. Overall it feels like it was redesigned by interns and certainly without any UX expertise. The old app was far superior.
