More About Kahoot! Learn to Read by Poio

Kahoot! Poio Read makes it possible for kids to learn to read on their own.
This award-winning learning app has taught over 100,000 children how to read by giving them the phonics training they need to recognise letters and their sounds, so that they can read new words.

**REQUIRES A SUBSCRIPTION**

Access to the contents and functionality of this app requires a subscription to Kahoot!+ Family. The subscription starts with a 7 day free trial and can be cancelled at any time before the end of the trial.

The Kahoot!+ Family subscription gives your family access to premium Kahoot! features and 3 award-winning learning apps for math and reading.

HOW THE GAME WORKS

Kahoot! Poio Read takes your child on an adventure where they have to master phonics to save the Readlings.

Letters and their corresponding sounds are gradually introduced as your child explores the world, and your child will use these sounds to read bigger and bigger words. The game will adapt to the child's level and every word they master will be added to a fairy-tale story, so that the child feels like they are writing the story themselves.

The goal is for your child to be able to show of their newfound skills by reading the story to you, their siblings or impressed grandparents.

THE POIO METHOD

Kahoot! Poio Read is a unique approach to phonics teaching, where children are in charge of their own learning journey.

1. Kahoot! Poio Read is a game designed to engage your child through play and ignite their curiosity for reading.

2. The game continuously adapts to each child's level of skill, providing a sense of mastery and keeping the child motivated.

3. Keep track of your child’s achievements with our email reports, and get advice on how to initiate a positive dialogue to reinforce learning.

4. The goal is for your child to read the story book to you, their siblings or impressed grandparents.

THE GAME ELEMENTS

#1 THE FAIRY TALE BOOK

Inside the game there is a book. It’s empty when your child starts playing. However, as the game unfolds, it will fill up with words and unravel the mysteries of the fantasy world.

#2 THE READLINGS

Readlings are cute bugs who eat alphabet letters. They are very picky about what they like, and have different personalities. The child controls them all!

#3 A TROLL

Poio, the main character of the game, catches the cute Readlings. He needs their help to read the book he has stolen from them. As they collected words at each level, children will spell them out in order to read the book.

#4 STRAW ISLAND

The troll and the Readlings live on an island, in the forest, a desert valley and a winter land. The goal of each straw-level is to eat as many vowels as possible and find a new word for the book. A sub goal is to rescue all the trapped Readlings. To unlock the cages where the Readings are trapped, we give children phonic tasks to practice letter sounds and spelling.

#5 HOUSES

For every Reading they rescue, children are rewarded with the opportunity to enter a special “house”. This gives them a break from the intense phonetics training. Here, they can use the gold coins they collect to furnish and decorate the house, while playing with the subjects and verbs of everyday objects.

#6 COLLECTABLE CARDS

The cards encourage children to find new things and to practice more. The board of cards also serves as a playful instruction menu for the elements in the game.

need a little more time to understand the game for full review. I'm not sure if this can hold the attention of a 5 year old for long.

So disappointed with this game. We subscribed and my kids love it, but from time to time we get locked out for days at a time and can't get into the game. Wish you could fix this😢

Daylight robbery. I've paid twice now to sign up to this and STILL can't get in to the app. No customer service whatsoever. Used to be brilliant until bought out by Kahoot.

In the Italian version, some letters are missing, so it's impossible to put the letters into words and progress through the book.

The description of the game mentions the seven day trial, but FAILS TO MENTION that in order to get the free trial you have to sign up for a one-year supscription! If you sign up for the 30 day subscription you are immediately charged. I would say that their product description is very misleading in that regard!

Let me cover the big thing here first. It set me back 26 bucks. That's sizable, but ultimately, not really. Don't be a goldfish and get caught by the free trial. You're smart enough to know how that always goes. In regard to my 4 year old being entertained by this, I'd say it's not that fun. However, that's not a bad thing. He plays it, gets bored and goes back to the real world, then plays it again in a day or two. I would still recommend this to any parent of a 4yo. Good screen education

I purchased the game so my son could play. He loves the game and improves his language and reading skills. 4 stars for the game. It's would be better if it had more variety, whole word and sentence reading and other reading reading strategies. 1 star star because the purchase is not tied to the login profile. Because I purchased the game on my phone using my android profile, he can not play on his tablet. Plead fix. This is not the case for iPhone. Why differ for Android? 5 stars upon fix.

The app makes you login every time you start the app with a user name and password. Of course this is very difficult to do for my 5 year old who needs my help. After a few password resets I was finally able to login only to get a message saying "you're logging in with a student account, all your progress will be lost". I almost threw my chromebook out the window.

Good learning program, I don't mind paying for the subscription to support well-developed apps. One star because the program keeps switching to other languages mid-stream. If I quit the app, goes back to English. However, when I come back after 10 min or so, I'll see my child working on the app in a different language. As far as I can tell, the user cannot change the language after initial set-up. Also, my child got to the end of chapter 1 but could not advance. I looked through the app, various screens, etc, and could not see any way to advance. When I clicked on any of the characters, the app just said, "Ebba wants to rest", etc.

I've been buying Dragon Box apps and recommending them for years. My family loves them, and I love the way math principles are taught in such fun ways. (Still waiting for mult/div!) I recommended it yet again, then went looking for new DB apps and found this. Surprised at no cost (I always warn people they are a little pricey but worth it), I quickly realized why - SUBSCRIPTION? Well that stinks. I thought $8 for an app was high, but now that's just to play it for a month. Boo!

Poio consists of several mini-games (gathering letters/words, matching sounds with text, and assembling words) stiched together to keep children's interest as they practice reading skills and unlock a story. It is a well designed game and accomplishes it's goal. Where it differentiates itself from similar games, however, is it's awful pricing model. Despite being an offline game, it requires an expensive subscription to play, ending up 10x more expensive. While good, it's not worth the cost.

Love it for my children, I homeschool. my daughter has issues with reading, we've done hooked in phonics and while it helps she still had a hard time reading/remembering. I've tried all kinds of different reading apps, plus when they were in public school first grade. She still struggled. Since getting kahoot kids my daughter has improved DRASTICALLY and is doing much better, not just in reading but in math, specifically multiplication. Only issue is no more levels, she's done with the book.
