More About Layton: Curious Village in HD

Digitally remastered in HD for mobile devices and with new, never-before-seen animated cutscenes, it’s time to run the cerebral marathon with Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
The tale begins as Professor Layton, a true English gentleman and famous archeologist, drives to the remote settlement of St. Mystere with his apprentice, Luke, in response to a request from the widow of a wealthy baron. The baron’s will indicates that the family treasure, the Golden Apple, is hidden somewhere within the village, and whoever finds it will inherit the whole of the Reinhold Estate. The Professor and Luke must search the town for clues leading to the precious heirloom.

Featuring a distinctive artistic style that oozes old-world charm, the game’s quirky cast of characters instantly comes to life. The animated cutscenes, remastered in HD, tell key parts of the tale in gorgeous detail. And ever-present in the background, the original soundtrack, beloved by many players, keenly captures the mood of the Layton universe.

Based on the "Atama no Taisou" (lit. "Head Gymnastics") books by Akira Tago, Professor Layton and the Curious Village brings together more than 100 brain teasers including slide puzzles, matchstick puzzles, and even trick questions to flex players’ observation, logic, and critical thinking skills. In addition, rather than just selecting challenges from a list, players uncover puzzles through conversations with the villagers or by investigating their surroundings.

I never has a chance to play this on DS so it was nice to find this in the Play Store. Found the story to be mediocre but it's a charming little game that is relaxing and fun to play. Most puzzles are a nice balance between difficult and solvable. Just be aware that some puzzles are more in the style of riddles than true logic puzzles, and pixel hunting for puzzles and hint coins can be tedious. Hope there will be more DS games put on mobile in the future as they are much more accessible.

This game was wonderful on the DS. It's just as good here. These games are perfect for phones. The tap controls of the original switch perfectly to touch controls. The puzzles are great. The plot and various characters are even better. If you haven't played these games yet, you should really give them a try.

Fantastic game, updated art looks amazing. Only issue I've found is one of the audio channels is distractingly louder than it feels it should be. Specifically noticable is the car engine in the driving cutscene and the puzzle jingle after Luke yells "I've got it". Aside from this minor issue the game is great.

If you're like me and hate puzzle games, well, It doesn't matter, this is such a good game! I couldn't believe how much fun it was! I've never liked any puzzle games, I found them hard and frustrating, but this game had fun, entertaining puzzles, and the ones I didn't care for had great hints to help me along the way. Not to mention the storyline was amazing! It got me so hooked, and had so many twists! If you're looking for a game to keep you busy, that also challenges the mind, get this game!

I played this game on the DS when it came out. Its a point and click game with some very good puzzles. Some of the puzzles are really more suited for the DS with a stylus and the built in notepad, while very helpful in the DS, doesnt translate well to fingers. Youll be best off in bying a phone stylus or using good old pen and paper. Tho this is truly a fantastic game.

So glad that there is a mobile version of this game. I been a fan of Layton after we got the 'Unwound Future' for 3DS, so what a treat to find out that there is an app! It's so charming and sometimes brain racking frustrating! lol But I'm so glad I finally got to play this. It was shorter than I expected, but no complaints because I know there are more puzzles waiting for me!

Good (now) classic game with some quality puzzles and really good production values, but some puzzles (Digital Clock, looking at you) have some unwritten assumptions that affect the "right" answer in the puzzle, which seems like an oversight. That aspect can definitely feel frustrating.

Pretty fun so far, and I like that charms were added, so it isn't just an HD remake with nothing much added to it. Audio issues are pretty bad though, would be a lot better if the voice acting and sfx were two different things, as the sounds tend to completely overpower what the characters are saying.

It was a nice game..great graphics. Cute lil plot twist. I did like the puzzle testing my brain. For my personal taste i love a good mystery game. So i would have loved to focus a lil more on that than puzzle after puzzle. (Yes you can skip and go back to the puzzle but you also need to complete them in order for the story to keep going Let me breathe and enjoy the game But overall you should give this mind challenging game a go if this is your sort of game or you wanna keep your brain healthy

Basing this review off my experience with the series. This was my very first game I bought with my own money for DS and was hooked ever since! Love the story, gameplay, and characters! (Also loved proving the GameStop employee wrong cuz he said I was too young to get the puzzles 😆) Edit: Haha, the 4th wall breaking is great! I like that a new aspect of charms were introduced to mobile version!

Absolutely fantastic experience! If you're like me and you've never given the Professor Layton series a try SERIOUSLY buy this game and give it a go. Just wonderful and charming from beginning to end and satisfying to solve every puzzle. I ordered "The Diabolical Box" (the sequel) before I was even finished this game and I can't wait for it to arrive! Long story short: the perfect series to play with a warm drink on a rainy day curled up in some blankets.

An amazing mobile experience. Not perfect- sometimes puzzles require a bit more finesse then a phone can reasonably provide- but overall, I have had a lot of fun with it and could recommend it to everyone. The puzzles are fun, the art direction unique, the main characters charming and the plot simple and fairy tail esque. A definite treat.

The Professor Layton series is some of my favorite games of all time, and this is by far the best way to play them. The art and sound have been remastered perfectly, and the game itself is a great fit for phones (though I'd recommend getting a stylus for some puzzles, particularly if you have big fingers). If you like puzzles and brain teasers, there are few better options out there.

Got this a while ago; I've been playing casually on and off and have loved every second of it. It's one of the best mobile ports from console I've seen. My only hang up is being an old time Layton fan, I want this on my switch; but I'll inevitably get that there with whatever else gets ported. I almost never double or triple dip, but for you Professor--this reminds me of a puzzle!

Don't let the $10 pricetag scare you: this is a full-length, beautiful game (that was originally $35 on the Nintendo DS in 2008) with amazing music, visually arresting art, a compelling story, and ZERO microtransactions. I played some of it via the original DS release when it hit the States in 2008, and I must say, this Nintendo DS game has transferred PERFECTLY to smartphones (see also: The World Ends With You), with high-resolution art and music. Don't be on the fence: this is a must-download!

Exceptional adaption to mobile! I've had the Professor Layton games on DS and loved them for years, but I feel like Curious Village was BORN to be played on a modern smartphone or tablet. I loved playing through again, loading times were mostly negligible, and the game just looks and sounds beautiful. Excited to try out the second one next!

If you are considering using a Rom and playing the old DS version DON'T! This game not only has updated graphics but updated gameplay as well. All the good stuff (like the memo pad) have been added to the game. PLUS the cut scenes are able to be turned full screen. It's just like playing the later versions of Layton (with the high quality and gameplay) but getting to replay a CLASSIC! It also has a wicked autosave feature. I don't know how I couldn't of convinced you already. Get this NOW!!!

I'm only about 10 puzzles in yet, but it's pretty engaging so far. I have mostly already seen the puzzles I have come across already, these are just variations on those, so little bit disappointing in that regard. Good story, I'm excited to solve puzzles to see what happens next. I agree with others that the sound effects are too loud, but thankfully you can adjust the volume in the settings. One bigger annoyance is it doesn't use Play Games to link your account, so I had to create an account out of game, accept the email, go back into the game, and go through a cumbersome login process in the game. Having it be just 1 click would be nice. That's only if you want to sync progress across devices however. Worth $10? Not sure. $3 - $5? Absolutely!

A nice, creepy little detective story takes you from one logic puzzle to the next. I overthought quite a number of puzzles that looked like they wanted me to do math, but you don't really. A few of the puzzles were extremely difficult for me to solve, even with hints, but fortunately all puzzles are optional. Challenging and engaging! The animation sequences at key story points are very enjoyable!

A lot of fun. I never played the original but so far this is a really good and seamless adaption. The only thing that gave it away as a port (other than the split screen style which I recognise) is that the gameplay is reminiscent of 2010s DS gameplay, it's a lot more laidback and less fast-paced than a lot of games today. I like the puzzles, they remind me a lot of doing math Olympiads in school. Would highly recommend this to anyone who likes puzzles! I'm on chapter 3
