More About ObsIdentify

Recognize nature in one click! Take a photo in Europe or the Dutch Caribbean and find out which species it is. Collect all your wildlife observations in the app. You'll be rewarded with tips to find new species, earn badges, and be invited to join challenges. Create groups with colleagues, family or friends, to share your stunning nature observations. Your observations, and those of others, contribute to biological research and knowledge about nature. Every observation counts!
ObsIdentify only recognizes wild animals, plants and mushrooms in Europe and the Dutch Caribbean. Please do not use the app for selfies, people, pets, house or garden plants.

The image recognition in ObsIdentify is made possible by millions of observations from thousands of users of Waarneming.nl, Waarnemingen.be and Observation.org. ObsIdentify is a product of the Observation International Foundation, in collaboration with Naturalis Biodiversity Center (The Netherlands) and Natuurpunt (Belgium).

Many identifications are wrong. It is user friendly and works for common species, but identifications are better checked before publishing. There does not seem to be an option to enter a species manually when the correct name is not in the suggested list. But this is how such citizen systems improve and get better over time so there are more correct reference images. Rather disappointing. Other such apps like iNaturalist perform better. Sad as such local apps with local common names are needed.

Have found this a fairly useful app. However, although the app allows you to identify recently taken photos (I don't mean in-app ones) I am unable to upload any older photos from my phone or gallery folder. The app has all the required permissions turned on. Being unable to use Obsidentify on older photos is a significant disincentive to using the app in future.

Very annoying to work with. Takes too much effort to get a clear picture and save it. Had 2 pics of a hornet and a butterfly. Instead of saving the app spazzed and reverted to the menu. This is within te first 4 pictures. I would rather have this app running inside my camera app and have more freedom in getting the picture right and autosaving it. If it is not fine I can always delete it later. Not really impressed by this app in current standing.

It's generally a good app but lately it hasn't been working, I keep getting "Oops something went wrong!" whenever I try and identify something.

Used mainly to help with moth identification, provided photo I take is reasonable accuracy is high, app is easy to use, and data is used to support citizen science , what's not to like?

When taking a picture for an observation, the app resets almost every time. It's becoming impossible to add observations

Nice application, but it fails to get the location from the phone. It does access the location, because the icon is showing when using the application. After almost one year there is still no fix for this. So lost another ⭐ Thanks for the answer. But this issue is there already for a long time now. Maybe enable manually entering a location would simplify this and make it less frustrating

ProTip: turn location back on in the camera app settings every time you turn phone location on, otherwise you can't save ID. Took me way too long to figure that out. Best identification app I've seen yet (and I've tried many). Amazing at identifying. Gives info on the morphology, which is good when automatic ID is unclear. Gives information on the species. Absolutely love the app. Only downsides: - blurry pics when taken in-app - can't delete IDs, which is bad if you've wrongly ID'd something

Not a bad app, but it does get it wrong sometimes (e.g. keeps suggesting mandevilla is gold chain). I would really appreciate an option to correct or fill in the species manually. Also, even though you get the option to make an observation either through the camera or a picture saved in your phone's gallery, it won't let you save observations from the latter in the app.

Good concept but missing functions. Doesn't offer to save the pictures to gallery automatically. Now I use the camera app and then upload. Would be nice to create observations without photos, and to save observations without uploading if they are uncertain. Badges and challenges are cool, but very animal focussed. Would be nice to create more, and track them in a similar fashion to stackoverflow. Can imagine automatic challenges based on nearby observations (that's how I use the website).

Came here to say pretty much exactly the same what Jip Berkelder said! I too would love the option to delete observations and connect/share observations with friends. Maybe even a possibility to do challenges together? Besides that, while taking a picture in the app it looks quite sharp but after it has been taken (so before identification) it suddenly gets (a lot) more unsharp. Those things aside, loving the app and how it is gamified with badges and challenges!

Love the app! If the observation is unsure, you can just add more pictures and it automatically determines the location, which is very convenient. However, I would like to be able to remove observations (I could not find a possibility to do this), since I found one wrong determination. Also, it would be nice to have a function that allows you to follow friends and see their observations.

I love this app even though it has some flaws. When I go into the woods, the app can't determine my location. Sometimes the app suggests wrong species. At other times it can't accept a more generic identification and shows only possible identifications my phone would have to have a microscope for. I'd like the algorithm to switch to the genus, when it can't find the correct macrospecies or microspecies.

The new version is great! It recognizes so many species. Feedback for developers: sometimes(1/30 species) it crashes after determination of a picture right when i want to save it. Has to do with certain species (Wolf Spider Unknown for example). You just can't save the determination. Other then that, great app!

Awesome service. The app can be buggy but mostly works well, and I'm glad to have it. My top two requests: (1) more sort options for my observations: by location, animal type, etc. and maybe a way to combine duplicates so I can just see a list of local species I've identified, (2) a widget/shortcut directly to the camera feature, as when I see an insect I want to be able to take a picture before it leaves. (I prefer not to use the normal camera app for this, as I don't like to geotag my photos.)

I love the app but I can't accept an invitation to a group. It keeps sending me to the Google Play Store but I already have the app. Tried everything, entering the link in browser, QR-code, clicking on the link..

It works very well. As additional feature it would be useful if I could choose the group for each upload because some groups have a defined region or topic, so I could contribute more selectively.

Makes some bizarre mistakes but easy to use and educational. Awards silly badges which can be ignored.

Dear ObsIdentify Team, I suggest adding a feature to obscure users' exact locations when sharing observations. This would enhance privacy and security, allowing users to generalize their location. Thank you for considering this improvement. Best regards,

Obsidentify is convenient to use interfacing well with the camera on my Sansung phone and is frequently used to identify invertebrates species, flowers and other living forms. It is my first choice to identify unknown moths that come to my trap. Unlike some other apps it appears to suggest British species, helpful in Britain, but it also made convincing assessment of African species. The weakness is that is at times not totally reliable. AI not perfect, and may convince novice recorders.
