More About Plex Media Server

The Plex Media Server scans and organizes your media, then lets you stream it to all of your devices. It's the central, most important piece of Plex. Once installed, it gets to work scanning and cataloging every piece of media, making it look beautiful and intuitively organized.

Warning to anyone trying to use this for a server. Buggy and now won;t start after several attempts. Running latest version. Don't waste your time.

I love Plex. I've bought Shield to run Plex server. But SMB implementations is so unreliable. On Linux is mostly not working. Update: Got Plexpass to use offline sync. And it is broken for Shield Plex server.

Why does this software have to be so completely unreliable? The Nvidia Shield server app has gotten steadily worse for the past 18 months. It is now basically unusable as it never loads the library. Starting to think this company doesn't test this software before you releasing it.

Android update on my Shield Pro broke my server, reinstalling, deleting cache, restarting, factory reset nothing works. Cannot make server run using the latest version of of it, FRUSTRATING!

Why so slow updates compared to other platforms? Crashes often. I'm a lifetime plex pass user and I'm constantly disappointed in Plex server on Shield. When it works it's great.

Getting REALLY sick of having to rebuild my libraries, metadata, covers, etc. on the Nvidia Shield every single time there's an update to the app. If you can't even update an app without breaking everything, what's the point?

Would give no stars, but have to give it one to write this review. Two days trying to get it to work, any online help is worse than useless. Amazing a program you install, can't get it to work and no help. Strongly suggest using Kodi, don't waste your time on this program.

Poor implementation of Plex on NVIDIA SHIELD. Seems to be an afterthought app for this developer. Anytime there is a server update my server goes down, even after updating the app server won't start until it feels like it. Plex won't remote stream 4k files either off the shield.

UPDATE: After more than a month of no plex due to Upgrade 9.0, the Upgrade 9.01 has me back up and running. My only question is - Why so long? I'm putting some stars back because it is up and working. ------------------ HELP!!! Everything worked perfectly until this last update (May 13, 2021) The Plex server works fine on all of my devices, but the Nvidia Shield Pro TV (Gen 1) will not play ANY file in my library anymore. All I get is "An error occurred trying to play this video. Please check your connection.". I have a lifetime pass and now it's all disabled. Is there anyone out there that can get me running again??? Can I install the previous update? This is an Nvidia Plex Server with a USB media drive that has worked since I installed it. I'll give it 5 stars if I can get it up and running soon. -----------------------------UPDATE After a week of searching for answers I installed a fresh server and client and it came back up and worked great. ------------------------------NEW BAD NEWS Fast forward to 1/12/22: Nvidia Experience 9.0! Yea! Plex server just somehow vanished. In my Plex server settings under PLEX MEDIA SERVER it is now BLANK. This is usually the spot that says if the server is up and running. I remember going there and seeing the words START SERVER. How do I start it now? ----------------------------DAY 2 - STILL DOWN Still can't upgrade the Plex Shield server. I can't find it in the play store and It's not on the NVidia site. I finally stumbled into the updates in the play store and there is a plex server in there from Jan 5. WHY DIDN'T I GET IT? I rebooted, and now NOTHING. NO FILES, NO LIVE VIDEO. If it's fixing something or working, shouldn't it tell me? I'm staring at an empty screen!

Plex is like past products from AMD. Requires constant tinkering to keep running. In three years I have not experienced a full month of Plex running without interruption. It great when it works tho. It just rarely works properly.

It's as bad as it can get. It turns 300+ USD device (Shield) to a completely unusable piece of hardware. It crashes on everything - adding a new video, playing a video - you name it. It slows down the device to a halt. If you can avoid it - please do. Never, ever pay them a cent.

I had been using Plex to access mp3 media on external ssd for over 2 years. I use a Yamaha CTX420D Music Center to access the Nvidia Shield as an appliance. This stopped working about 2 months ago & i believe Plex is the issue I tried using Emby on Shield which my Yamaha does see however there are known issues with Emby which although sees all files will not play any. I have spoken with NVidia & Yamaha but seems no way of getting Plex involved. Issue with Plex Server on Shield is current version is installed via playstore and will not support older versions.

Every new release is a step backwards. More bugs are introduced. Latest version crashes at least twice while watching the 6 o'clock news. Shows don't delete when manually deleting them. They add new features that nobody wants. I'm a lifetime subscriber but I am just about to look for alternatives.

Super buggy: Cannot play offline files without an online connection because the "offline" screen on startup cannot be bypassed. Additionally, it crashes my Nvidia Shield quite often, playback suddenly does not work; sound plays, but no image. Pausing does not work suddenly, buffers a lot. This is bad. Use KODI instead. The latest issue is with the new Plex Agent - it does not show subtitles stored in the same folder. There exist multiple huge threads in the Plex community forum about this issue.

Back to Kodi. I keep trying Plex and I am constantly disappointed. I'm trying to shift away from Kodi, however I keep going back. I tried Plex again recently and after many many problems I did a factory reset on my Shield TV, and I formatted a flash drive for adoptable storage. I watch every day as the storage used by Plex increases. Kodi took up less than 500 MB, Plex is up to 5 GB for the same database. Prior to the recent factory reset the Plex database was over 7 GB. I am attempting to switch to local database in hopes it reads the .nfo and .jpg files accompanying every single movie and TV show. The fact that you CANNOT use Plex for local media on a Fire TV Stick just gives me more reason to dislike Plex.

I see a lot of negative reviews but Plex has been brilliant for us. Using on an Nvidia Shield, external drive plugged in for storage. I pay for Plex Pass so the whole family can use it and I barely hear any issues from any of them. It's not without it's faults obviously but the frequent updates generally fix anything major. 5/5 from me.

Been using it for many many years on my 2015 SHIELD TV 16GB. It is much better than it used to be, and it just keeps on getting better. I sometimes have 6 concurrent streams, and the home screen and app navigation on the SHIELD don't seem to suffer from it (I have yet to notice any slowdowns). All media is stored on a Synology NAS, accessed through SMB shares.

Plex, as a company, is non-repsponsive to it's customers. There has been a long standing issue where the server looses connection to the TV tuner and the DVR stops recording however, the company prioritizes things like offering more free TV stations, that not many people actually use. Plex has bugs such as when the user presses the 'back' button, instead of going back 10 seconds it skips the video ahead 5 minutes. Like with the antenna and the DVR, and long standing issue that Plex moves below internal priorities such as changing the color of a button. Generally speaking I do love Plex because I can watch my recorded shows anywhere I have a device, but when there are ugly bugs reported and they do not respond, it only upsets the customer base. I have the Plex Pass so I am not paying a monthly fee but if I was, I would likely consider cancelling my subscription of the lack of support from Plex.

This is amazing! I have compiled my entire family's film and TV show library, as well as home movies and pictures. They can stream any file easily. I am using a Nvidia Shield TV Pro as my server and I can have 5 users at once streaming with almost no problems, and more if they are using a direct connection. The updates come fairly often, which is nice. There are always some issues, but they are usually fixed within a few days with the latest updates. You can't argue with the price... I am now a Plex pass subscriber and will be using the DVR function to record OTA media. Plex is amazing! All of the 1 and 2 star reviews need to updated their reviews, because most if not all cited issues that have been fixed. I'm assuming these people are either completely computer illiterate, or work for some competing company, or just have some sort of loyalty to another media server option. Setting up Plex takes some know how, but if it is fairly doable for any normal person like me, then you can do it too.

Works reasonably well on a Shield Pro 2019 device. My setup has the Plex client on the Shield as well, and content storage on an external 3TB WD Red drive connected to the Shield via USB3. Loses its mind every once in a while, and I'm trying to determine whether it's the software or the Shield operating system at fault. Has not happened often enough to nail down the cause. Three incidents in four months, with all three cleared up by rebooting the Shield, a relatively simple and quick procedure. I used to run Plex Server on an old PC, then on a NAS, but this is much better as a much lower power solution that doesn't need to stream local content across my home network.
