About Us

We're Dale and Carrie Spoonemore, the creators of “From Seed to Spoon.” We decided in spring of 2015 that we wanted to try growing food for our family of 6. We started with a typical Oklahoma Bermuda grass lawn, and over the course of two years, we converted it into an urban backyard food farm. We spent nearly all of our free time over the course of those two years reading books, attending classes, and watching YouTube videos to learn all we could about gardening and growing food, and now our FREE mobile app combines everything we've learned into one easy to use app!

We remember how lost and overwhelmed we felt when we first started, and now we want to share what we’ve learned in hopes of helping others grow food for themselves as well! Growing your own food doesn't have to be difficult and we're here to help you grow food efficiently, economically, and sustainably!

Love the app quite a bit. I just wish it was easier to access my favorites, I often want to go straight to my favorites list but have to dig around for it. I'd also like a tab on the plants page dedicated to care, when to trim how to trim etc. Overall one of the better apps I've started using for gardening. I like being able to shop right in the app.

App was super laggy and slow to the point where it would take a full 10 seconds to do a very simple thing. I mean EVERYTHING would take forever to do. Just something like adding a plant to my garden will have like 30 seconds worth of delays. It's a shame because this app looks very useful and like it would fit my needs perfectly as a new gardener but it's just so painfully slow. I use the android version by the way but I don't know if that contributes to it.

I've giving 4 stars for one reason and one reason only and thats because you can only add one plant to your garden+ list then it goes back and you have to start scrolling through the list again. It would be super convenient and efficient if you could choose and add all the plants at one time. Also a layout of some sort for your garden would be nice.

I'm not one to rate apps usually, but I adore this! It is clear that the folks running the app have put a lot of love into it, and it shows! The info provided is great, and I love being able to track my plants. The only thing I wish could be added is garden planning - i.e., graphic plant placement, perhaps with warnings if you are placing plants too close together, or beside "enemy" plants, as described in the "friendly plants" tab. Otherwise, this app is perfect. Thank you so much!!!

Update: New Update won't open and leaves all white. In addition, previous in 2021 the app was great for anyone starting off. Now there isn't an option for free use that is useful for those that are trying to afford basic needs to feed 8 children. Understanding that money needs to be made but if you have to deal with advertisements then it should remain free in my opinion. Options for all financial situations is ideal. 3 Phrases to describe my experience...User friendly, informative, useful.

This app is full of useful information. I'm in love with the capabilities built into the Garden+ section. I can track sprouting, watering and any other notes I like. There is an option to add photos which is very cool. I just recently found the option to buy seeds through the app, so exciting! This app is an invaluable tool for tracking our family's journey to growing. I would like to add plants that are not listed. Hope to see the option soon, but still a fantastic app.

Updated 2/16/2023: I'm lowering my rating from 3 stars to 2. They've added lots of new stuff to their app, but now they put functionality that I used last grow season behind a paywall, which I don't appreciate. I'll be deleting. Overall, a really great tool, but the lag is more than a little annoying. When adding pictures or log notes, or even just changing pages, the lag takes several seconds and often makes me wonder if I tapped the button correctly. Aside from that, I really love this app.

It's informative, easy to use, and easy to customize a lot of stuff. The events/notes option is awesome. I like that the selections include some less common plants, but I wish we could add our own plants and projected harvest dates. I also hope that there will be an option to push notifications for harvest dates in the future. I would definitely pay for a full version with those options.

I liked this app until the subscription plan and severe limitations put on free version. I get you need to make money but I am not willing to pay a monthly subscription for this app. I'd be a lot more likely to pay a one-time fee to remove ads and get access to features that are somewhere between free and premuim versions. And your response that it's less than the cost of a seed packet isn't quite accurate. $1.99 at lots of stores. I'll be uninstalling and looking at affordable alternatives.

It was great before. WAS. The free version before recent updates was great. Now, you can only put 3 plants‽ Are you KIDDING me? I don't mind ads. I don't mind having to pay for certain upgrades. I get it! You're a business and need to make money, but the cost of the app month to month or yearly is WAY too expensive. All of the changes, no lower tier available, and the hefty price of a GIANT turnoff. I'll be looking for a more affordable app, or just figuring it out on my own.

The app is great for some things and poor for other. There is no button on the home page or even on the menu that routes to "your garden". Also, there are no notifications. Ideally as a new gardener your biggest issue in the beginning is when to do starts, transplant, fertilize, ect. I had thought this would have notifications to help that along. It's a great resource for information and if you don't mind setting your own notifications on a seperate calendar but that can be fairly tedious.

The best gardening app I've found BUT it isn't perfect. It frustrates me that it easily acts up on my phone (such as it blanking the screen or taking forever just to type something down after using the app too long or scrolling through it too fast). Another thing is that I can't Manually add everything I have. I wanted to put scallop squash but the closest thing I found was summer squash (zucchini). I'm sure it's similar (I'm a beginner) but I would love to keep it as accurate as possible.

This app is awesome! It really helped me with understanding the number plants per square foot and when to plant/transplant into the garden. In particular, I love being able to save the location of a plant in the garden. A visual location (like a grid) would be a positive change; however, that is only if I am being picky. 4 stars only because the app glitches when I add plants to the garden+ and I end up with duplicates.

Really enjoying this app so far. I wanted an app that would make heavy use of photos and colors to keep things organized and this is perfect. Currently using it to keep track of my vegetables I'm growing indoors. I really love how the companion planting section is laid out when you go underneath a plant. The list is great how each tab both has the plant written and the image in the background. The visual details like this are what made me want to keep using this.

Love the app! I enjoy adding things to my garden so I can keep track of what is where and how it should be progressing. Each plant has great info on how to care for it. The potential is great, but it doesn't feel all-inclusive. What it needs for me to give 5 stars: more plants (i.e. yellow squash, garlic), the ability to set aside plants for later addition and/or multiple planting dates, a place to diagram my garden/plan my layout, links between companion plant articles.

Looks like a good app and provides good info but once I saw the free limitation of 3 plants for a garden with an ad-based experience was disappointing. I'm not keen on the idea of a subscription service to unlock the features for the app to have a more pleasant experience either - if it was a one time fee then for sure but I'll research a more cost effective alternative for my first time gardening. I experienced no app lag on my device mentioned in other reviews.

The lag & freezing of the App on my Android while using the Garden + feature was frustrating me for several weeks until I decided to try the Universal Web version. There is a noticable improvement in performance. A feature that is missing from the Universal Web version in the Garden+ Plant Notes section is the ability to choose "From Photos". I still have to open the Android App in order to select from photos that I have already taken. Overall this is good App.

This app contains tons of information about almost everything I've planted so far! Occasionally, I run into species that aren't in the system, but when that happens, I simply request to add it. Sometimes, the app has difficulty saving the information when I type in a varietal that isn't already in the database, but it is only a small flaw in an otherwise excellent app. This app is now just as vital to my gardening experience as my trowel and gardening gloves!

I enjoy this app very much. I have memory issues and this app helps me continue gardening without having to try to remember everything. I recommend it to everyone I meet. I love that it shows you the best companion plants, and the health benefits of the plants. Not to mention it offers information and assistance on the pests that are attracted to each plant and how to deter them. Additionally, they have videos and workshops to help as well By far my favorite gardening app. Thank you!

Great app right up to where it forgets all of your data, and your gardens, and that you paid your subscription. I lost all of my information for this year's gardens, hoping their support team can restore it. I was really enjoying the app until this mishap! Update, the support team was able to get everything fixed within a couple of hours! Yay!
