More About Website Shortcut

Personalize your Android homescreen by creating your own icon shortcuts for websites (URL/URIs). Customize your website shortcuts with your own selected text and image. Furthermore, there are no advertisements and it's free. I made it originally for myself, and decided to share. Giving a fair rating is very well appreciated!
From Android Oreo on (due to an API change, upon which this app is built), the bottom right tiny icon of the app the shortcut belongs to is added automatically by the launcher.

Features:
* Choose your own label and icon for the shortcut and the website URL/URI to open
* Icon selection via local file selection
* Works with most icon packs
* Supports usage of general URIs (e.g., mailto:[email protected] )
* Broad support for image formats: *.png, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.ico, *.gif, *.bmp
* Automatic https scheme suggestion if it misses from the URL
* Make use of "Share via..." in any other application (e.g., a browser) to conveniently fill the website URL/URI field
* View the labels and website URL/URIs of currently present shortcuts of the app (navigate to the in-app drawer menu -> "Current shortcuts")
* Free
* No advertisements

--- Data policy

Creation of a shortcut is done by passing the shortcut design (label/icon) and an Intent with the website (URL/URI) to the system shortcut manager and the launcher. The system shortcut manager and the launcher create and manage the shortcuts, and maintain them with their associated Intents. In some cases (e.g., upon app, launcher or system update, or restore from back-up), the system shortcut manager or launcher might lose icons of existing shortcuts or even entire shortcuts. It is recommended to keep somewhere a list of labels, icons and website URL/URIs so you can recreate easily. In the app drawer menu, you can open the "Current shortcuts" which displays the labels and website URL/URIs of the still present shortcuts retrieved from the system shortcut manager.

In this version (≥ v3.0.0) a large randomly generated identifier is used to uniquely name shortcuts such that the launcher can uniquely identify shortcuts. In prior versions (≤ v2.1), a creation timestamp was used as unique identifier. Shortcuts created by prior versions (≤ v2.1) will still have their creation timestamp stored within their Intent and unique name.

Uninstalling the app (i.e. via Settings -> Apps -> Application List -> Website Shortcut -> Uninstall) will remove the app from the device, including its data. The Android uninstallation procedure will also notify the system shortcut manager and the launcher, which should remove from it all shortcuts associated with the app.

There are no advertisements in this app.

Thanks you creator! This took forever to find, but it was worth it. After an update to my phone, I lost all my shortcuts on the home screen and couldn't use the "add to homescreen" function anymore. A lot of people are having this issue, so I will recommend this. I run a business and it's important to have the function to get to websites I use on a daily basis. It was fast and easy and worked like a charm!

Perfect! Exactly what I wanted. I went through 2 websites, and a handful of apps, none of which would help me do what I wanted to do. All I wanted was to be able to customize the icon to a shortcut of a website that I added to my home screen. This app does exactly that! And does it flawlessly. Very happy!

The interface was good and I was glad that the app explained its permissions and data policy clearly. Only problem is that creating a shortcut fails everytime with the message "shortcut installation failed". I understand this to be ultimately due to an Android API change in Oreo to which app developers are scrambling to respond, but for me for now this app is essentially non-functional. (Android version: 8.1.0. Launcher: ADW Launcher 2.0)

Former versions are 4-5. 2 due to the very unfortunate decision to remove the auto selection of icon. The main benefit of the app is the ability to select å browser upon each use of a shortcut not the ability to change icon which is supported by most advanced Launchers. Try installing lower versions i you can.

I love this app. Simple to use. With the Corona virus and everyone using zoom I can make a shortcut for my deaf students they can click it and it goes straight to the meeting or to my zoom. I wish you made it for iPads and amazon it has made my job so much easier helping them connect to classes and different ones. Thank you so much.

Another One bites the dust. This used to be a great app that automatically populated the icon and name just from the site URL now you have to manually download and save icon files and type in the name. Why on Earth would you remove a fully automated function? Literally makes no sense why they decided to make the app worse.

The app does what it says it does, and does so beautifully. The only issue I have is a feature request. The only feature I would like to see that isn't there is that some websites have icons attached to them; I'd like it if Website Shortcut had a feature to search for and retrieve that icon for use in the shortcut.

BEWARE! Do not update! The whole purpose of the app is to create a shortcut as well as enter your own label. This is what 'Add to home screen' doesn't offer. Yep - exactly that functionality is now removed from the app, making it much more complex (you now first have to capture an image somehow and store it locally).

V3: TERRIBLE design change. No longer able to fetch favicons, major functionality loss. Illegible in Dark Theme. Still no Export/Import, so update trashed hours of my work. NO longer recommended. I now use the more capable HTTP Request Shortcuts. V2: You must recreate shortcuts after upgrading Android version if generic Android icons appear. ORIGINAL: Love ability to create custom Web desktop shortcuts, especially with ability to specify custom icons. Great implementation, logical and easy to use. Wish I had known earlier. Recommended.

Really good app. It's so easy to create shortcuts to my home screen. Tried using both Chrome and Edge browsers shortcuts to home screen but they didn't work as well as this app. Update: Even better now because I've found a way to create shortcuts to files and pictures stored on my phone, not just for websites.

Since the major "update" to v. 3.4.1 on on 1-14-22, this app went from just "Ok", to "not so good" with the removal of automatically adding the webpage icon as the shortcut icon. Now, it is more difficult to find an added 'shortcut' and distinguish it from other app icons and other shortcuts created with this app. This app was better, before it was 'improved'. ("Fixed it until they broke it".) I'll be looking for its replacement soon.

No more "App not installed". Extremely useful for creating web shortcut widgets not tied to a particular browser app—e.g. if you change you default browser from time to time and either disable or uninstall the previous one. Also, this app has no ads, no in-app purchases; as simple as it gets.

Excellent app! It lets me create website shortcuts for Firefox that have CUSTOM names - not the long URL or whatever else Firefox grabs. And it does it without pestering you with ads. If this hadn't been free, I would have bought it. I have a Galaxy S7 with Android 8 Oreo and it works flawlessly.

Awesome app! Easy to use. You can add short cuts on your home page and title them and add your own photo to make an icon for easy identification! Took a little time to figure out how to add the icon photo but all in all, it's straightforward and easy to use! Love it. No more shortcuts naming themselves! Thank you.

I read the reviews and downloaded the previous version which extracts icons from websites. It works perfectly. Removing useful functionality in the latest version is really stupid, but forced by Google. Not the fault of the app developers.

This app does only one thing and does it very well. I'd grown tired of shortcut icons that pictured only a single letter and was looking for the easiest way to customize icons that couldn't be recognized at a glance. In seconds I can fix that boring icon and make the new shortcut so much easier to identify. Thank you, dev, for sharing this wonderful little tool!

It Works! Does exactly what it says in an easy way even on Android 9. Many shortcut apps don't actually put the shortcut on the home screen, but this one works. It's advantage over the shortcut features on many browsers is that this one will point to the current default browser instead of the one used to create the shortcut if done from within a browser. Nice advantage if you switch browsers. Only desire a way to suppress the watermark added to the icon. I'd pay for that.

Works Great! I like having shortcuts to frequently used sites on my homepage. Though I was always a little frustrated that they couldn't be edited by changing the name or icon. This app fixed that. I also like that is automatically uses the default web browser to open pages. The only thing that i would change would be to have the option to not have the tiny app icon on each shortcut. Maybe in a paid version?

This app does exactly what it says it does. It is simple and does not require extra permissions. And yes, it does add in the docs, that in case there is a glitch somewhere, you should save the icon image in a text file, along with the link, and the icon label. Nice clean app which fills an important gap left by chages in Android Chrome. I like it.

Create Spotify playlist shortcuts! It was so easy, and it worked the first time. I wanted shortcuts on my Android homepage for specific Spotify playlists I listen to all the time. I've been missing them since Spotify got rid of the ability to do this. Using this app was so easy. Just copy the URL, paste it, pick a picture you've downloaded for the button, name it, and drag it to the screen.
